Maths Functional skills Level 1
This course is designed for those individuals who have no formal maths qualification and who want to refresh their understanding of basic maths concepts and work on those areas they have problems with. Functional skills L1 is equivalent to GCSE grade D or E but more focused on maths in the everyday world and the workplace. The aim is to improve individuals’ employment and career and progression prospects.
The course involves a short online initial assessment and diagnostic exercise to access your current understanding of basic maths concepts and to identify your strengths and weaknesses. A tailored programme will then be put together including online exercises and tests. When the tutor considers you are ready for assessment you will attend a revision day where you will revise your areas of weakness and carry out mock tests and if ready take the final online test.
You will need to demonstrate competence in the following:
- Numbers, estimating and rounding, negative numbers. converting metric numbers
- Fractions, addition and subtraction and converting to decimals.
- Probability and mean mode and median. Range and frequency tables
- How to create formulae, solving formulae (BIDMASS). Distance, speed, time triangle.
- Perimeter and area and volume. Plans, elevations and scale drawings.
- Ratio and direct proportion. Graphs. Pie charts, scatter diagrams.

Maths Functional skills Level 2
This course is designed for those individuals who have already achieved a L1 qualification or Maths GCSE grade D or E. It is designed for those who want to progress to Maths Functional Skills L2 for a career change, or career progression or to apply for an Apprenticeship or University. Functional skills L2 is equivalent to GCSE grade C /4 but more focused on maths in the everyday world and common usage and the workplace.
The course involves a short online initial assessment and diagnostic exercise to access your current understanding of basic maths concepts and to identify your strengths and weaknesses. A tailored programme will then be put together including online exercises and tests. When the tutor considers you are ready for assessment you will attend a revision day where you will revise your areas of weakness and carry out mock tests and if ready take the final online test.

- Multiplying adding and subtracting fractions. mixed numbers and improper fractions
- Creating percentages and converting fractions to percentages. Percentage difference.
- Finding probability of single and multiple events. Probability trees.
- Mean, mode and Median and range. Frequency tables.
- Formulae, solving formulae (BIDMASS). Mass, density volume triangle. Creating formulae.
- Area and volume, perimeters and surface nets. Plans and scale drawings. Circles and cylinders.
- Ratio and direct and indirect proportions.
- Graphs. Bar and scatter diagrams and coordinates.
